They are not divinity, ie: gods or goddess, in the usual sense of the word, and yet they are not mere mortal;
often, it is easier to classify them as minor divinity...

If we look at the idea of fairies, you would find that they have been around a lot longer than everyone expects.
Perhaps the earliest form of fairies can be found loosely in the mythical beings in Greek mythology,
such as the nymphs, or mythological spirits of nature imagined as inhabiting
rivers, streams and woods, or other locations...
BLESSING OF THE STREAM
Some Irish people say that if you sit in their quiet, green forests until dawn,
you may catch a quick glimpse of a fairy known as a Dryad.
A Dryad is a tree spirit, usually found in the highest boughs of the Irish trees...
SALUTE TO THE SUN
Amidst the magic of the European Alps lives the Vila,
the enchanting guardian fairy of the mountains.
Vilas have been rumored to aid in hikers' times of need:
during avalanches or when hikers lose their way in the snowy regions of the Alps.
Vilas have also been called Mountain Nymphs.
