Welcome to Uganda ~ Memor Spiritus
As we depart our Uganda Gallery we thought we would share some interesting information
about the amazing creatures that allowed us the privilege to share their home...
GENTLE GIANT
Elephants form deep family bonds and live in tight matriarchal family groups of related females called a herd. The herd is led by the oldest and often largest female in the herd, called a matriarch. Herds consist of 8-100 individuals depending on terrain and family size.
"You scratch my back..."
Cattle egrets are small, white birds that sit comfortably on the back of a buffalo. Cattle egrets sometimes hunt like other wading birds, catching fish and frogs along the water's edge. But, most often, they follow these herds of livestock to eat the grasshoppers that are stirred up by the cattle's hoofs. Cattle egrets eat little bugs that bite and tend to bother the cattle.
Mother and Child
Grooming is one of the biggest social activities among baboons, and the reasons given range from the removal of ectoparasites to maintaining social bonds.
Ugandan Fish Eagle
The African Fish Eagle is a large species of eagle found throughout the sub-Saharan Africa wherever large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply occur. It is the national bird of Zimbabwe, Zambis, and South Sudan. Though this species may resemble the Bald Eagle in appearance; each species occurs on different continents, with the Bald Eagle being a resident of North America.
